Get to Know Our 2016 Market Manager and Market Manager Assistant!
Our market is run by a team of Steering Committee members, volunteers, and passionate people who love seeing local businesses and guests from the community come together to create a vibrant, cheerful gathering place. We want to help you get to know our team, so we will be doing regular features of our Steering Committee, volunteers, and other team members. This week, get to know the two women running the market every Wednesday: Carley-Jane, our Market Manager, and Kara, our Market Manager Assistant!
Carley-Jane Stanton has been our Market Manager since 2014 and loves our little community market! Carley-Jane has been involved in a variety of food-related activities in Edmonton, from working for Riverbend Gardens for three years to founding the Alder Food Security Society and completing a one-year term as a member of the Edmonton Food Council. Carley-Jane recently graduated from the University of Alberta with a BSc. in Agriculture with a major in Agriculture and Resource Economics and will be heading to Oxford University in the U.K. this September on a Rhodes Scholarship.
Carley-Jane's favourite meal at the market is Yellowbird's Cafe Truck's vegan sushi burritos, as they're a light and healthy way to fuel busy market days, though she's been known to ask for special off-the-menu items from Ayumi and her team! She loves the hidden gems at our market that make her summer meals extra special, including the perfectly tiny patty pans and cherry tomato packages from Dargatz Family Farms and the Simit from Melodi's Kitchen. She'll miss her favourite special items from market when she leaves us in September!
Kara Goodkey has been a long-time volunteer at SWEFM and we are so pleased to have her join us as our Market Manager Assistant for the 2016 season. Kara is a master hopscotch-drawer, volunteer leader and trailer packer and is an excellent leader in our market community. She is a recent graduate from Lillian Osborne High School and is heading to the University of Alberta this fall to study biological sciences.
Kara loves the Bully Mac from Bully Food Truck, and if you catch her on her break in the info tent, she'll most likely be enjoying a meal from Bully. She usually stocks up on fresh fruit for her family when shopping at the market, including their favourite apples, blueberries and Rainier cherries from our B.C. fruit vendors. When she's looking for a special market treat, however, she loves the new brown sugar popcorn from Original Canadian Kettle Corn, and the smell of it cooking up wafting toward the info tent is usually too hard for her and her team of volunteers to resist!
If you see Carley-Jane or Kara on-site at market, be sure to say hello! They love to chat about the market, answer any questions you have, and make recommendations for where to find the ingredients for your next amazing market meal.
